A recent report from Realtor.com names Miami as the U.S.’s #4 city for super-cool, have-to-have-it, intuitive and gadget-friendly “smart homes.”

Using this definition of smart-home technology: “products or tools that aid in controlling a home’s functions, such as lighting or temperature, either remotely by a connected device or with a separate automatic system within the home itself,” the Realtor.com team found that Phoenix was the #1 city for all-things-interconnected, remote-controlled, safe and smart.

After Phoenix, the rest of the top-for-smart-homes list includes these cities:

  1. Phoenix, AZ
  2. Dallas, TX
  3. New York, NY
  4. Miami, FL
  5. Los Angeles, CA
  6. Houston, TX
  7. Chicago, IL
  8. Riverside, CA
  9. Atlanta, GA
  10. Salt Lake City, UT

In other smart-home areas listed, Miami also makes the Top 10. For smart security, Miami is at #7 (Dallas is #1) and at #2 for smart lighting (LA is at #1 there). Realtor.com reports that the three most sought-after smart home features include smart thermostats, lighting automation and security systems. Other popular areas of smart home technology are music and theater systems, as well as health monitoring systems. Many homeowners use their Smartphones, tablets and other smart devices to monitor and control their systems both from inside the home and remotely.

Wealthy Homeowners & Their Luxury Smart Homes

This recent study cited in Town&Country points out that smart homes (along with private islands, services apartments and green homes) are what’s hot and in-demand among the most wealthy of homebuyers and owners. On the subject of smart homes, the report explains, “Smart homes, once the preserve of technophiles, have spread throughout the market as technological advances become more accessible and integrated into luxury home construction practices.” (You can access the original report here.).

One interesting point to keep in mind is that there is likely a correlation between the adoption of smart-home technology and the growth of new home construction in a certain market. With this in mind, it would make sense that sought-after and popular areas such as Miami made so many of these “Top 10” lists.

And let’s face it…who doesn’t want a home that offers smart, fun and efficient tools and capabilities?
